Boletus separans Pk. Cap 6-15cm across, broadly convex; dark, dull red to liver brown or bay; dry to somewhat tacky, often slightly wrinkled-rugulose. Tubes white to yellowish. Pores small; pallid then pale yellow, not bruising. Stem 60-150 x 10-25mm, even to clavate; usually paler than cap, or concolorous; covered with fine network overall. Flesh firm; white, reddish near cuticle. Odor pleasant. Taste pleasant. Spores subfusiform, 12.5-16 x 3.5-4.5µ. Deposit olive-brown. Habitat in mixed woods. Uncommon. Found in northeastern North America. Season August-October. Edible-good. Comment Ten percent KOH on cap or stem surface turns bright green.
